The Cognitive Cost Of Convenience: AI Will Impact Our Brains

by David Rice

Some years back I had a side gig writing articles in which I essentially translated medical research on the brain and aging into layman’s terms for a digital magazine.

One of the pieces I found most fascinating was regarding the use of GPS systems and its impact on spatial memory.

A study conducted by researchers at McGill University found that the more a person used GPS, the steeper the decline in their hippocampal-dependent spatial memory.

What does that mean?

Basically, spatial memory, or your ability to remember where things are located, takes place in the hippocampus, a region of the brain heavily involved in memory, learning and emotion. It takes short term memories and transfers them into long term storage in our brains.
